Sarasota's Lido Beach remains closed to the public following damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton. It has been a month since visitors could access the beach, known for its beautiful sunsets. The Sarasota City reported significant damage to the Lido Beach Pavilion and parking lot, requiring repairs for visitor safety.

In the face of nature's fury, city crews have been tirelessly working to remove what were mountains of sand manually, some amassed to heights of four feet along Ben Franklin Drive. This effort was to gain access to the pavilion simply. "We're working hard to get Lido Beach to a point where it can be reopened," said Jerry Fogle, Parks and Recreation Director, according to information obtained from Sarasota City. The city acknowledged the challenging task ahead, as subsequent clean-up revealed substantial safety risks in the walkways and access points.

The persistent closures began on September 25 when Hurricane Helene swept through, tearing apart the concession area and contorting the infrastructure meant for safe passage. Then, in a cruel twist of timing, Hurricane Milton followed on October 9, exacerbating the existing damage and deferring recovery efforts. Sarasota's Parks and Recreation Department, along with Public Works, have been persistent in their response, confronting the extensive damage that has locked away a cherished public space.

Restoration has extended beyond structural to include functional aspects of the beach as well. The restrooms suffered considerable damage due to storm surges and required a thorough overhaul. Fogle expressed optimism about the progress, indicating a reopening on the horizon, "We anticipate Lido Beach will reopen in the near future," he told Sarasota City
