Yesterday, the Essex County Superior Court sentenced Ivan Santos Lula, a 56-year-old man from Lynn, to a prison term of 12 to 15 years for multiple child rape and assault offenses. Convicted by a jury on August 16, Lula faced charges that included two counts of rape of a child with force, two counts of aggravated rape of a child due to age difference, and three counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. As reported by the Essex County District Attorney's Office, the indictment came in February 2021.
Upon completion of his sentence, Lula will undergo three years of probation replete with specific conditions. These include mandates to register as a sex offender, participate in sex offender treatment, and maintain distance from any unsupervised children under the age of 18. They also included orders to stay away from the victim and their family, with the judge noting the victim’s "remarkable bravery" in confronting their abuser, as released in a statement by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
During the trial, Judge Salim Tabit imposed the sentence, highlighting the courage displayed by the victim in coming forward. The representation for the Commonwealth was by Kate MacDougall, Chief of Family Crimes and Sexual Assault Unit, working under Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker. Mark Brunswick Schmidt served in the defense for Ivan Santos Lula, facing strong evidence and testimony.
The prosecution, led by MacDougall, presented a case that led to Lula's conviction and aims to protect potential future victims by limiting his interactions with children after his incarceration, serving as a measure for community safety.
