Macomb County is poised to significantly upgrade its training facilities for firefighters with a recent multi-million dollar investment from the state of Michigan. Macomb Community College's Public Service Institute (PSI), situated in Clinton Township, will be the beneficiary of a $2 million boost, as reported by The Detroit News. The funds are earmarked for constructing a new facility that will mirror a real-life fire station and provide an immersive training experience for fire academy cadets and local fire departments.

To commemorate the funding milestone, a demonstration was held where Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel and State Rep. Denise Mentzer descended dramatically down a five-story training structure. Hackel commented, “Denise, I’m all in. If you’re going over the edge, I’m going over the edge,” as relayed by CBS News Detroit. This gesture was to tangibly illustrate what firefighters will learn at the updated PSI. The planned modernizations are not just about a new building, but also about refining the cadets' learning environment to closely replicate actual fire station operations.

The current PSI infrastructure, opened in 1996, features the Midwest's only five-story live burn tower, a distinctive asset for practicing firefighters. Michael Lopez, the director of the institute, emphasized the critical nature of realistic training, stating, "The more that we can make it mimic exactly what they're going to see when they get on the job, that adds a realism to the training that, it's critical," in an interview with The Detroit News. The anticipated completion date for the new facility is set for the end of 2025 or early 2026, with the intent of increasing the training space to accommodate more students.

While the recent $2 million funding is a significant startup, approximately $11 million in total renovations are planned for the PSI. Macomb Community College is working to secure the additional $9 million needed, which would also go toward essential updates such as an expanded fire apparatus bay and virtual reality training for law enforcement. County and college officials believe that these enhancements will ensure cadets and first responders are prepared with the most current skills and tools to serve their community. “This investment championed by her is a testament to the strong partnerships built between the college, Macomb County and the state of Michigan,” Hackel said, as per Macomb Community College.
