John Anthony Castro, a Mansfield tax preparer whose business dealings were anything but honest, has been handed a more than 15-year sentence in federal prison for tax fraud, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Leigha Simonton announced Tuesday. The virtual tax preparation business owner who positioned himself as an "international tax expert" was convicted on 33 counts of assisting in the preparation of a fraudulent return, as per the U.S. Department of Justice.

Court evidence revealed Mr. Castro's lofty claims of tax expertise couldn't be further from the truth. Graduating from law school but never passing the bar exam, Castro created a portfolio of exaggerated deductions for his clients. His practices include serious violations such as filing returns without permission and claiming unjustified deductions – to the tune of $90,000 for a client earning $103,000. According to U.S. Attorney Simonton, "he bullied and berated clients who dared question his methods," as cited by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Refusing to provide clients with copies of their returns and engaging in vindictive behavior when challenged, Castro's professional misconduct has now resulted in substantial financial strain for many of his former clients. Ongoing audits and amended returns, stimulated by Castro's fraudulent filings, have only added to their distress. Castro's conviction, as the U.S. Attorney's office reported, is a cautionary tale to tax preparers everywhere and a testament to the diligence of IRS-CI.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys P.J. Meitl and Nancy Larson led the prosecution, resulting in Castro’s sentence to 188 months in prison and an order to pay $277,243 in restitution. The investigation, spearheaded by IRS Criminal Investigation, underscores the agency's commitment to pursuing tax preparers who play fast and loose with the law for their own financial benefit.
