In a concrete step toward addressing housing instability, the Medina Metropolitan Housing Authority (MHA) has been awarded a $600,000 grant to actively support the establishment of an Emergency Housing Shelter in Medina County. Named Next Step Up, this shelter represents a beacon of hope for many as it becomes the first emergency housing facility in the region. The Ohio Housing Trust Fund Special Projects Grant Program, administered by the Ohio Department of Development, supports this significant financial boost.

Next Step Up is strategically designed to directly assist individuals in crisis, offering an array of resources and, more importantly, a safe environment for those in need to regroup and rebuild. State Rep. Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth) expressed her joy over this development, stating through the Ohio House of Representatives website, "This shelter is the first of its kind in Medina County." It is intentionally designed to help people in crisis by providing them with resources and a safe space as they work to get back on their feet. I am overjoyed to hear the MHA has received funding to support this effort! This project has resulted from a collaboration between Medina County’s Churches, Social Service Agencies, and elected officials - under the Leadership of Skip Sipos of the Medina Metropolitan Housing Authority. Her words exemplify the collective effort that has brought this initiative to fruition.

The shelter's all-encompassing amenities set it apart as a versatile community resource. Accommodating men, women, children, and guests' pets, Next Step Up aims to serve a broad demographic with its inclusive policies. The facilities include practical amenities such as laundry services and computer stations, alongside a playground that caters to the needs of younger residents in a nurturing environment.
