The Memphis Extended Stay motel on American Way has been shuttered following a declaration as a public nuisance by the Shelby County District Attorney's Office. With nearly 800 police calls recorded since August 2022, including incidents of homicides, overdoses, and assaults, the establishment has become synonymous with criminal activity, forcing the authorities to take decisive action. In a statement obtained by WREG, District Attorney Steve Mulroy conveyed, "This closure sends a clear message that we will not tolerate properties that harbor criminal activity and threaten the safety of our community."
The series of crime-related incidents at 4300 American Way led to numerous interventions by the Memphis Police Department, including, according to Local Memphis, at least three homicides, three DOAs, 11 overdoses, and several armed robberies and aggravated assaults. Tips from Crime Stoppers in August 2024 indicated illegal drug sales within the motel rooms, with the suspected involvement of hotel employees.
On Wednesday, the Memphis Police arrived to execute the closure of the notorious motel. The operation resulted in numerous arrests and the seizure of a substantial amount of illicit drugs. Among those arrested, according to Action News 5, were individuals with outstanding warrants, including Montrell Burton, Chiquita Williams, Angela Garvin, Darren Coleman, Charles Tigner, and Cameron Coleman.
Throughout the two-year stretch that saw Memphis Police respond to a staggering 793 calls related to criminal activities at the motel, the relentless pattern of violence and lawlessness carved an image of a place deeply rooted in disorder. As asserted by DA Mulroy in a statement obtained by Action News 5, "We are committed to working alongside law enforcement to ensure that dangerous establishments are held accountable." The efforts of law enforcement reflect a continued commitment to restore peace and legality to communities overshadowed by such establishments.
