A Memphis man has been arrested in connection with the shooting and kidnapping of a 15-year-old girl. The incident occurred at the Hickory Point Apartment complex, located in the Fox Meadows area. Authorities report that the girl was shot and then abducted at gunpoint by Voshaun Crayton, 27, this past Wednesday.
According to WREG, Crayton is facing serious charges including two counts of aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon. The affidavit states that the victim and her friend were driving a borrowed 2013 Ford Fusion when Crayton used his vehicle to block them. He then allegedly stepped out, brandished a firearm, and threatened, "Get out the car before I shoot y’all both in the head."
The situation escalated when Crayton discharged his weapon once into the air and then again into the car, striking the young girl in the hip. As reported by FOX13 Memphis, the teen's companion ran for safety while the victim was forced out of the vehicle and made to accompany Crayton in search of his phone and the other victim.
Details shared by Action News 5 add that after the initial confrontation, Crayton continued to fire shots while compelling the injured teen to aid in his search. Afterward, he brought her back to the Fusion and fled the scene, leaving the wounded girl behind. Subsequently, the teen was treated at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital and reported to be in non-critical condition. Astonishingly, Crayton later reported his car as stolen on the same day of the incident.
Memphis Police took Crayton into custody where he was charged; his bond has not been set. The motivations behind the assault remain unclear, as both victims reportedly told officials they were uncertain about the reason behind their attack. The young girl has identified Crayton as the assailant in a photographic lineup. As this case moves forward, the community looks on, awaiting further developments and justice for the young victim.
