Memphis residents who rely on the Memphis/Summer Avenue Driver Services and Reinstatement Center for their driving-related needs will have to look elsewhere for the next few months. According to a recent announcement on the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security's website, the center located at 5266 Summer Ave., Suite 75, is scheduled for a closure starting Wednesday, Oct. 16. The reason behind the shutdown is a planned remodel, and the doors won't reopen until January 2025.
This temporary closure might inconvenience residents who have come to depend on the facility for a myriad of services. However, they won't be left in the lurch. The Department has listed several alternatives, where citizens can complete their transactions such as renewing licenses, handling reinstatement fees, and even voter registration. There are nearby Driver Services Centers including the Memphis/East Shelby Drive and Bartlett Express Services Center, as well as several Shelby County Clerk locations and Self-Service Kiosks dotted throughout Memphis and its suburbs.
The full list of alternative locations can be found in the official announcement. Remodeling is an inevitable part of infrastructure maintenance and enhancement. It can lead to better service and upgraded facilities in the long run. While the Summer Avenue center undergoes its transformation, drivers can use any of the following locations:
- Memphis/East Shelby Drive Driver Services and Reinstatement Center - 3200 East Shelby Drive, Memphis
- Bartlett Express Services Center - 6340 Summer Ave., Memphis
- Millington Driver Services Center - 5019 W. Union Road, Millington
- Oakland Driver Services Center - 160 Beau Tisdale Drive, Oakland
- Covington Driver Services Center - 220 Highway 51 N., Suite 1, Covington
For quick stops, the Shelby County Clerk's office and various kiosk locations are available, these include the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, Germantown City Hall, and several Memphis Police Stations among others. Transactions at kiosks are streamlined to accept credit or debit card payments only. While not all services are covered, citizens can manage most of their immediate requirements at these alternatives until the remodel is completed next year.
