Over 2,700 health care workers from Michigan Medicine are poised to conduct a one-day strike on October 15, highlighting demands for increased pay and restoration of pandemic-era benefit cuts. The employees, supported by the Service Employees International Union Health Care Michigan (SEIU HCMI), presented a formal strike notice to the hospital administration. This move follows a nearly unanimous vote, with 98% in favor of the strike action, signifying a robust collective resolve.
"No one wants to go on strike, but sometimes the message must be loud and must be clear," SEIU HCMI Deputy Trustee Larry Alcoff emphasized in a statement obtained by the Detroit Free Press. Alcoff stressed the importance of equity and parity, acknowledging the sacrifices made by healthcare workers through the pandemic. Their efforts to unionize, completed in two stages between July 2023, and March 2024, reflect a concerted pursuit to address these grievances.
Michigan Medicine, in response, expressed disappointment at the prospect of a strike but maintained a confident stance on continuing negotiations to avert work stoppage. "But we remain confident that we can reach an agreement without a work stoppage," a University of Michigan Health statement indicated, as reported by The Detroit News. Plans are in place to ensure patient care continues unaffected in the event the strike proceeds.
SEIU HCMI's formation is seen as an assertion of dignity, with a call for increased starting wages and commensurate pay for experienced staff pointing towards a drive to set wage standards across Michigan's healthcare sector, according to a press release cited by CBS News Detroit. The union involves a spectrum of professions from within the medical center, including respiratory therapists, phlebotomists, patient care technicians, ECMO specialists, and unit clerks, among others. Their collective bargaining efforts reflect a broader challenge to the healthcare system, set against the backdrop of a post-pandemic world where appreciation for such workers still hangs, in balance.
As the strike date approaches, both Michigan Medicine and SEIU HCMI remain engaged in talks, with the union's focus on achieving a successful contract resolution, per Alcoff's statements.
