Motorists across Michigan have begun to feel a bit more relief at the pump as gasoline prices have seen a significant decrease, making it the lowest the state has experienced since the early part of the year. A report released today by AAA-The Auto Club Group confirmed that the average price of gas in the state now stands at $3.12 per gallon for regular unleaded, which is a 15 cent drop from last week's average. This figure represents a 34-cent decline compared to last month and is 22 cents less than what drivers were paying in 2023 at the same time, according to CBS Detroit.
Contributing to the household economy, the average cost to fill a 15-gallon tank now sits at roughly $46, down from what was approximately $12 more that motorists shelled out during the peak prices in August 2023. The dip has been more pronounced in certain areas with GasBuddy noting a 10-cent reduction to an average of $3.18 per gallon in Detroit, further emphasizing the downward trend in both state and national gas prices. In Metro Detroit, prices are now averaging at $3.20 per gallon, still slightly above the state's overall average price, as highlighted by The Detroit News.
AAA's spokesperson, Adrienne Woodland, highlighted the potential for continuing declines in her remarks on the situation. "Motorists across Michigan are seeing much lower prices at the pump," Woodland said. "If demand continues to fall, alongside increasing gasoline stocks, gas prices may continue to drop." This sentiment was echoed through various reports that noted the presence of the least expensive prices in locations such as Benton Harbor at $3.01, Flint at $3.02, and Grand Rapids at $3.04. These details were outlined by WXYZ.
Nationally, diesel prices have also seen a diminished cost per gallon, with GasBuddy reporting that the average now stands at $3.54—the lowest it's been in over three years. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, seeks to temper the political narratives surrounding gas prices. "While many Americans may incorrectly credit the upcoming election for the declines, politicians have little influence over the strong seasonal forces that drive prices lower in autumn," De Haan told The Detroit News. GasBuddy, providing a national overview, marked the average price of regular unleaded gasoline nationally at $3.07, a five-cent decrease from the previous week.
