A Middleburg woman has been dealt a sentence of 21 years and 10 months in federal lockup for her role in creating child sexual abuse material. Meggin Anne Evans, 35, pleaded guilty to the charges, acknowledging her part in this egregious offense, according to a press release by the Department of Justice.

The investigation that brought Evans to justice began when the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office received a tip-off about CSAM being circulated via a social media platform; they linked these activities back to the Putnam County Jail, setting off a chain of events, that led to, the identification of Evans and her husband, Brandon Paul Smolinski, as the perpetrators. Furthermore, the Internet output from their residence was found to be the source of additional CSAM uploads, adding weight to the allegations against them.

Law enforcement agents, during a search of Smolinski’s phone, uncovered multiple files of CSAM which included a video sent to Evans, and communications between the couple discussing the exploitation of children and expressing their sexual interest in minors—therein was the evidence of Evans providing Smolinski with a photograph showing a child being sexually abused. "The sentencing of Meggin Evans for production of child sexual abuse material, and her husband’s sentencing earlier this year for distribution, is a testament to the commitment of the detectives and special agents who work relentlessly to combat the sexual abuse of children," Assistant Special Agent Tim Hemker of Homeland Security Investigations in Jacksonville echoed in the statement obtained by the Department of Justice.

The case was a collaborative effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies brought together by the Northeast Florida INTERCEPT Task Force, the case saw Smolinski sentenced in June 2023 to 17 years and 6 months in federal prison for distribution of CSAM, before Evans’s recent conviction.

Under the broad umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, the Evans case shows a concerted national initiative to clamp down on child sexual exploitation and abuse. The multi-agency collaboration highlights a streamlined approach to tracking and prosecuting offenders, assisting the victims, being a crucial aspect of this overarching objective, for more information on this, the Department of Justice's website offers insight into the far-reaching implications of such initiatives.
