A Milwaukee community is marking its remembrance of a young life tragically cut short by gun violence through an act of academic empowerment. On Tuesday evening, local leaders will give new details on how to apply for scholarships in honor of Patrick "PJ" Ross, a 25-year-old who was a victim of gun violence on October 8, 2023. Alderman Russell W. Stamper II will lead a news conference detailing the scholarship initiative in Ross's memory, according to the City of Milwaukee.
Known affectionately as "PJ the Grill Master", Ross was an integral member of the Dream Team United WI, serving as a youth ambassador. In a statement obtained by the City of Milwaukee, Alderman Stamper commemorated PJ's active engagement in community service, noting his eagerness to assist in local events, often loading and unloading trucks or providing sustenance at gatherings. The scholarships, initiated by Dream Team presidents August and Sally Schober, are a tribute to PJ's dedication not only to the organization but to the wider Milwaukee community.
Interested students can apply for the scholarship by sending an email to [email protected]. According to the City of Milwaukee, the scholarship awards four deserving students with $1,000 each. This gesture of goodwill stands not only as a testament to Ross's legacy but also as an investment in the future of Milwaukee's youth.
The news conference is expected to be attended by members of Ross's family and the scholarship committee, who will outline the criteria and application process for prospective students. According to the City of Milwaukee, the event is scheduled to take place at N. 35th and W. Center Streets at 5:30 p.m. today. It represents a significant moment for the community as they seek to honor the positive impact PJ Ross had during his too-short time among them.
