A Milwaukee man, age 21, was taken into custody after an altercation escalated into gunfire on Interstate 43 in Mequon. As per reports from the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office and relayed by FOX6 News, the incident transpired near Port Washington Road yesterday morning, around 10:52 a.m. It appears that a blue 2012 Ford Fusion fired a single round into a gray 2011 Toyota Tundra in what has been described as a road rage incident.
The bullet punctured the front passenger side door of the Tundra, lodging itself near the gear shifter inside the vehicle. Remarkably, the driver, who was alone in the Tundra at the time, was unscathed. Authorities swiftly shut down the northbound lanes of I-43 during their investigation of the crime scene, which, according to the Journal Sentinel, lasted approximately 45 minutes before the lanes were reopened at around 2:30 p.m.
After the shooting, the suspect vehicle was located and subsequently stopped by law enforcement in a business parking lot in Mequon. During the arrest, police identified the shooter as a 21-year-old from Milwaukee and found a firearm in his car. The Sheriff's Office issued a statement, noted by CBS 58, that witnesses reported a road rage incident evidently preceding the shooting.
The Milwaukee man is now facing charges including first-degree reckless endangerment, discharging a firearm from a vehicle on the highway, and possession of THC, marking his second offense. As reported by CBS 58, the investigation into this troubling clash of motorists is ongoing to ascertain the exact motivations and full circumstances that led to this potentially lethal encounter.
