An hours-long standoff in Milwaukee ended with officials confirming that a man found deceased inside a residence on 68th and Hope was struck by an officer's gunfire. According to the FOX6 News report, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the death as a homicide. This comes amid reports that a video related to the incident will be released in the days following, complying with standard operating procedure.
The officer implicated, a 28-year-old man with over three years of service, has been placed on administrative duty. FOX6 News details that the suspect inside the residence was approached by police after a shooting incident that saw three people flee the home, one wounded and armed. The dead man, found afterward and discovered to have been hit by the officer's gunfire, was armed and on a second-story porch at the time of the encounter. Despite commands to drop his weapon, he failed to comply resulting in the officer discharging his firearm.
WISN notes that preliminary findings from the medical examiner's autopsy reveal that the suspect was struck during a confrontation on North 68th Street and Capitol Drive. Officers originally responding to the incident at approximately 8:30 a.m. this past Friday witnessed a distressing scene, with individuals exiting the residence under gunfire.
The Tactical Enforcement Unit later found the suspect deceased, with a firearm beside him, inside the residence. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, led by the Brookfield Police Department, is now examining the interconnected events of that day. Meanwhile, a 33-year-old victim from the initial shooting remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, as "He was struck by the officer's gunfire and sustained fatal injuries," according to a statement obtained by CBS 58.
In the coming days, law enforcement will release video footage related to the incident. This footage may provide clarity on what transpired, as the implications for the community and those involved are being examined, particularly concerning the use of lethal force and interactions between law enforcement and residents.
