A routine kayaking trip in Wayne County led to a grim discovery on October 16, when a kayaker found decomposed human remains caught on the embankment of the Lower Rouge River near Pershing Street. Authorities were alerted and responded to the scene shortly after 5:15 p.m. to investigate the remains, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.

After confirming the remains were human, authorities expanded their search for additional parts. The following morning, the Michigan State Police Marine Service Team recovered more remains from the same body in the river. Although identification couldn’t be made at the scene, dental records later enabled the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the remains as those of a 56-year-old woman from Wayne, who had been reported missing on August 18, according to WXYZ.

The discovery has unsettled the local community, with residents expressing their discomfort at how close it was to their daily lives. "To think that like this happened that close to us and with this many people in the neighborhood, the kids and all that, is kind of weird and scary," neighbor Corey Ingram told WXYZ. Many in the close-knit community are now seeking answers, hoping to understand how such a tragedy could occur so close to home.

The cause of the woman's death remains undetermined, and Wayne police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Lt. Springer at 734-721-1414, ext. 1503, or via email at [email protected].
