Stanislaus County District Attorney Jeff Laugero announced that Damon Morrison Jr., a 25-year-old Modesto resident, has pled guilty to first-degree murder and will be sentenced to life in prison. This outcome brings some closure to a violent incident that shocked Modesto nearly four years ago and highlights the consequences of gang violence in certain neighborhoods.
The tragic series of events unfolded on the night after Christmas in 2020, when Maria Juarez, unaware of the dangerous turn that would cost her life, made an ill-fated detour into a street under the dark shroud of gang territory; This decision led her directly into the line of fire of gang members who misidentified her and her passengers as rivals, and Morrison, along with others, unleashed a hailstorm of bullets—more than 20 rounds—resulting in the tragic loss of Juarez to two fatal gunshot wounds and injuries to an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old who were also in the car.
The concerted efforts by detectives with the Modesto Police Department were key in apprehending Morrison and his associates involved in the shooting, as noted on the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Facebook page. Deputy District Attorney Tracy Griffin led the charge in prosecuting the murder on behalf of the people, showcasing the resilience of the judicial system in the face of such violent criminal acts.
The Modesto Police Department's Street Gang Unit linked several violent crimes to the gang involved in this incident through a thorough investigation. The District Attorney’s Major Crimes Unit has played a key role in reducing the gang's criminal activity.
