To address the housing affordability crisis in Oakland, a new development called Casa Sueños has opened its doors near the Fruitvale BART station, characterized by its focus on accessibility and community resources. This project has transformed what was once a city-owned BART parking lot into a community with 181 affordable units, available to families who earn between 20 and 80 percent of the Area Median Income.
Amid concerns over the growing number of individuals experiencing chronic homelessness in the region, particularly 46 units at Casa Sueños have been dedicated to permanent supportive housing to tackle this issue. The development is a collaborative effort between BRIDGE Housing and The Unity Council, with the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) contributing over $37 million in project funding, as a recent announcement describes.
Casa Sueños offers more than a roof over heads. It offers a full suite of amenities designed to support a thriving community. Residents will have access to a multi-purpose room, a community room with a kitchen, laundry facilities, a courtyard with play equipment for children, bike storage, and an underground garage with electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. In line with the push for comprehensive community development, the project boasts 7,500 square feet of affordable commercial space managed by Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice.
