Students and motorists in New Orleans can expect enhanced safety measures as the city's Department of Public Works activates additional school zone flashers starting Oct. 16, a move aimed at compliance with state law and bolstering student safety. These new activations, as WGNO reports, include areas such as the 2900 block of Paris Ave., Bienville Street at North St. Patrick Street, 3900 Canal St., and 1700 Nashville Ave., with flashers signaling the start and end of restricted speed times.
According to WWLTV, this is part of a phased plan to ensure school zones meet the criteria outlined in City of New Orleans Act No. 103, which necessitates school zone cameras operational during specific times: one hour before and one hour after the beginning and end of the school day, and the update is not the only change underway as traffic signs are also being updated and reprogrammed to reflect these requirements.
The city's efforts come as a response to a new mandate requiring strict adherence to the operation times for these cameras, a move hailed as a step toward increased vigilance for the vulnerable youth traversing these densely packed thoroughfares; "This phased activation is part of the City’s commitment to ensuring school zones comply with state law and promote safety for students and drivers," officials told WWLTV.
Continuing updates are happening across New Orleans with a significant focus on school zones, WDSU details the enlarging scope of this initiative; more than just flashers, signage is also under revision, and the notable streets of Paris Avenue, Bienville Street, Canal Street, and Nashville Avenue are just the most recent examples of areas undergoing these critical safety enhancements, as the city reprograms cameras and reshapes the visual cues that guide drivers through the urban educational landscapes.
