Come Monday, October 28, New Orleans' school zones will see enhanced safety measures as the Department of Public Works triggers additional school zone flashers to alert motorists to slow down. This move, as announced by the city's DPW, aligns with Act No. 103, which regulates the timings for school zone camera operations; these are to only be active one hour before and after school start and finish times to better ensure safety for students and drivers alike.
The city's crews have been reprogramming and updating signage to comply with the state law although they have run up against an issue with some traffic beacons struggling to synch with the new schedule requirements, and in a continuing effort to prioritize the safety of children, flashers will go up at a number of new locations including on Opelousas Ave., Read Blvd., Canal Blvd., Magazine St., Napoleon Ave., Hammond St., and Camp St, according to the City of New Orleans' official announcement. Drivers should be on alert for reduced speed limits during designated times in these zones; failure to comply can and will result in citations.
For those looking to get ahead of the curve, updated active school zone times, camera operations, and locations can be found on the city’s resource page. Motorists wrongly ticketed outside the legal hours have recourse, and they are urged to reach out to the Parking Adjudication Office at [email protected] for resolution.
