An investigation is currently unfolding in New Orleans East, where shots were fired at federal agents. The altercation occurred early this morning on the 7000 block of Lawrence Road, as reported by the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD). According to WGNO, the shots were aimed at officers who responded to a service call in the area. The suspect, believed to be involved in an aggravated kidnapping and armed robbery, reportedly shot at the agents and then barricaded himself within an apartment complex.
In response to the dangerous situation, the NOPD has placed Robert Russa Moton Charter School on lockdown while maintaining ongoing communication with school officials. In the Seabrook neighborhood, the incidents—including a large police presence and road closures—have prompted residents to avoid the area, as noted by NOLA.com. While no injuries have been reported as of yet, the standoff continues.
Surrounding the Willows Apartments and a nearby Chevron gas station, crime tape marked the scene shortly after the incident, reported at 9:59 a.m. by the NOPD. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Louisiana State Police, New Orleans Police, the FBI, and the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office, are present at the scene with "at least a dozen vehicles flashing blue lights," as mentioned by NOLA.com.
As the situation develops, law enforcement continues its efforts to safely resolve the standoff. A secured perimeter has been established in the area around I-10 and Crowder Boulevard, as well as at the Willows Apartments. "The area is secured and authorities are on the scene working to resolve the situation," the NOPD relayed to FOX8Live. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
