The New Orleans Police Department has released the latest batch of citywide crime statistics for the week spanning October 13-19. Within the confines of data, certain narratives emerge a decrease in gun seizures and firearms arrests compared to the previous year, a suspect cuffed and named in a homicide investigation.
On the front of notable actions taken by law enforcement, Eric Christopher Gentris, identified as a black male with a date of birth of January 2, 1989, was arrested last Wednesday in collaboration with the Louisiana State Polic and the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, as per NOPD News. He is the prime suspect in a homicide that occurred on the same night in the 6200 block of Bridgehampton Drive. Following his arrest, Gentris faces the charge of second-degree murder upon his extradition to Orleans Parish.
The NOPD's initiatives to tackle illegal gun possession have revealed a significant decrease in arrests. Thus far, in 2024, the department has executed 361 arrests, a 42-percent plunge from the 626 recorded during the same period in 2023.
Additionally, the number of firearms confiscated during criminal investigations reflects a similar trend of decline. NOPD had confiscated 1,788 firearms as of last Tuesday, marking a 21-percent decrease when laid alongside the 2,284 seized during the corresponding timeframe of last year. While the raw data implies a downtrend, the causation behind these numbers remains open-ended, subject to interpretation, and the domain of policy analysts and public concern alike, according to NOPD News.
