With the autumn colors as their backdrop, nearly a million attendees flocked to the North Carolina State Fair this year, marking the event as the sixth largest turnout in its over century-and-a-half history. According to Spectrum Local News, the fair, which is considered the annual grand festivity of North Carolina, concluded with a final attendance count of 998,926. The fair ran from Oct. 17 through Oct. 27 and was graced by 11 days of optimal weather conditions, which Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler credited for the high attendance numbers.
Beyond sheer numbers, the fair was to also serve as a platform for community support and philanthropy. "This was a great fair that was blessed with 11 beautiful days of weather and the attendance reflected that. But seeing people enjoying themselves, laughing with family and friends and making memories together is the true measure of success," Troxler said in a statement obtained by Spectrum Local News. Senior Day set a new attendance record for a Tuesday, with 85,738 visitors flowing through the gates. Hunger Relief Day at the fair resulted in a massive donation of approximately 280,000 meals, about 18 truckloads of food, as reported by ABC11. Smithfield Foods sponsored the day, with the collected food products earmarked for the MANNA Food Bank in Asheville to aid those affected by the recent storm, Helene. MANNA's warehouse was a casualty of the flooding, washed away amidst the deluge.
Entertainment and education were not sidelined, as fairgoers were treated to a dizzying variety of new and returning acts. The fair boasted two new thrilling amusement rides, including a sizable 210-foot slide and a charming 130-foot Candy Adventure Fun House. ABC11 describes the event as not lacking in auditory appeal, with a strolling piano serenading the crowds with tunes ranging from rock classics to Disney anthems. Not to be overlooked, the fair also introduced 72 fresh food options for visitors looking to indulge in new culinary delights.
The fair's agricultural roots were on full display as well. A Junior Livestock Sale of Champions concluded with bidders paying a total of $213,000 for premium livestock, while general and livestock competitions saw a healthy number of entries. As cited by MyFox8, the 20-year anniversaries for both the Tobacco Barn in Heritage Circle and the Field of Dreams exhibit near Dorton Arena added a historic flair to the festivities, and the Got to Be N.C. Pavilion attracted an increase in both participating food companies and attendees. Moreover, the N.C. State Fair debuted the N.C. Stillhouse this year, featuring North Carolina distilleries and their craft cocktails, adding a splash of local spirit to the event.
