Following a north-end drug raid that took place last Saturday, detectives have reportedly apprehended an individual on probation for his involvement in illegal drug distribution and possession of unlicensed firearms. According to a Facebook post by the City of New Bedford Police Department, the operation led to the arrest of Matthew OBrien, 18, after detectives executed a search warrant at 305 Earle Street, alleged center of a cocaine distribution service.
During the search, law enforcement seized multiple controlled substances including a plastic bag of crack cocaine weighing 28.5 grams, 17 tabs of oxycodone, partial tabs of Adderall, and a 63.1 grams plastic zip bag of marijuana. Aside from drugs, authorities found two digital scales, packaging materials, and $4,134, suggesting the operation of a sale enterprise. OBrien also had in his possession two firearms: a Glock 48 9mm and a Sig Sauer P365 with a defaced serial number, along with ammunition. According to the police report, OBrien holds no license for the firearms.
The City of New Bedford Police Department charged OBrien with trafficking in crack cocaine, possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, possession of Class B substances, possession of a large-capacity firearm for use in a felony with the serial number defaced, and possession of ammunition. OBrien's standing probation stems from a May ruling out of the 3rd District Court where he received a two-year suspended sentence. The arresting officer, Det. Jonathan Miranda, has not provided further comment on the ongoing investigation.
