An inmate from Oahu Community Correctional Center who had been reported missing after not returning from a furlough pass willingly surrendered to authorities on Wednesday evening. Shaun Fleetwood, 43, was supposed to return to the correctional facility on Tuesday morning but failed to do so, triggering an escape alert. KITV reports that Fleetwood turned himself in at the HPD Main Police Station on South Beretania Street around 9:40 p.m.

Before the incident, Fleetwood had been serving time for second-degree sexual assault and was to expect a parole hearing in December 2024. Now, he faces a new charge of second-degree escape, classified as a Class B felony, which could potentially add up to five years in prison to his sentence. He had been a part of the work furlough program, described as a "community custody inmate in the work furlough program with pass privileges" by KHON2.

The escape prompted a response from the Department of Law Enforcement Sheriffs Division as well as the Honolulu Police Department, who were promptly informed of Fleetwood's absence. According to officials, he was expected to return by 10 a.m. the day of his disappearance. Despite the swift action by authorities, it was Fleetwood's voluntary return that brought the brief episode to a close.
