Los Angeles County has concluded a major legal case against James Louis Boyd III, who was sentenced to a long prison term for attacking two police officers during a domestic dispute. Boyd received 50 years to life in addition to nine years and four months, guaranteed to keep him away from society for the foreseeable future.
The sentence was passed down after a lengthy trial, during which a jury found Boyd guilty on multiple counts, including assault on a peace officer with a semi-automatic firearm and shooting at an occupied vehicle. The jury decisively found true all allegations, which included Boyd's firearm usage and the infliction of injury substantial in nature. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, the crimes took place on April 7, 2019, when Boyd, from Oceanside, attacked responding officers to a domestic dispute call at a Hawthorne hotel. The officers were to merely perform their duty but were met with a violent outburst.
In their response to this outcome, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón stated, "Justice has been served with the sentencing of James Louis Boyd III to life in prison for his heinous actions on two officers during a violent domestic disturbance call." This case was handled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and prosecuted by LADA's Crimes Against Peace Officers Section (CAPOS).
Expressing gratitude to the team behind the prosecution, Gascón added, "I want to extend my deepest gratitude and commend the incredible work of CAPOS, in particular Deputy District Attorney Geoffrey Lewin, who led the prosecution."
