Chaos erupted in Tempe on Tuesday night as gunfire broke between a suspect and police officers during a routine traffic stop. According to a report by FOX 10 Phoenix, the violent encounter occurred near College Avenue and Curry Road at approximately 9 p.m., leaving one officer shot and a suspect dead.
The altercation began when the Tempe Police attempted to arrest the suspect involved in an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon case. The situation escalated quickly when the suspect reportedly opened fire, injuring one of the officers. Other officers on the scene were compelled to quickly return fire, fatally wounding the unnamed individual. Tempe Police Chief Kenneth McCoy expressed relief that the officer was not seriously injured and that bystanders were unharmed, asserting, "This was a proud moment for me to see our team respond and react the way they did," in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
The officer, who sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, has been reported stable and in good spirits at the hospital. While the precise details of the incident remain scant, the broader implications are palpable across Tempe – marking the city's involvement in a series of violent interactions this year.
Handling the ongoing investigation is the Mesa Police Department, as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team. Tempe Police Chief McCoy highlighted the weight of such incidents on the community, stating to AZ Family, "Every time an officer is hurt while serving and protecting our city, it resonates throughout our department and the community we serve." Despite the frequency of officer-involved shootings in the area, with this incident being the 43rd in the Valley and 72nd in the state in 2024, each event continues to grate upon the nerves of a community in search of stability.
