A fire on a second-floor balcony at an apartment complex in northwest Oklahoma City forced residents to evacuate and grab their belongings. One person and a pet were rescued during the chaos. Oklahoma City fire officials swiftly tackled the blaze that severely damaged 16 units, leaving at least eight completely ravaged by the inferno as reported by KFOR.
The urgent efforts of firefighters culminated in the rescue of a person with a minor injury, who received treatment directly at the scarred scene. The heat was so intense that, as one individual reportedly said, it could be felt from 300 feet away. Residents and emergency teams focused on survival and saving whatever they could. One resident held tightly to family mementos and important identity documents, according to News 9's coverage of the event.
After the fire at the Retreat at Riverbend apartments, emergency vehicles filled the street, and many residents were displaced. A maintenance man became a hero by knocking on doors to wake people up. One resident, Johnathan Perry, said, "Had he not knocked I probably would have died before the fire got there because there was a lot of smoke," in an interview with News 9. Oklahoma City Fire Department Captain John Chenoweth conveyed the gravity, mentioning a collapse of both the roof and a balcony as they fought the flames.
Investigators continue to sift through the charred remnants to ascertain the cause of the fire, although early reports from the Oklahoma City Fire Department, as stated by John Chenoweth in a statement to KOCO, suggest it may have ignited on a balcony, but they are yet to confirm. They do not believe the fire was intentionally started.
