The Oklahoma City Police Department has announced a measure to increase patrols in Bricktown following a surge in violent incidents over the weekend, as reported by Fox25 News. According to police authorities, the incidents included a stabbing on Friday night along with two separate shootings on Saturday, hours and blocks apart from each other. Despite the proximity and timing, the police have so far deemed the events unconnected.
In an effort to restore order, Oklahoma City Police Chief Ron Bacy indicated that an additional 10 officers have been tasked to specifically enforce existing curfews for minors in the entertainment district. "We want this to remain a family, fun and friendly environment for everyone," said Bacy in a statement obtained by Fox25 News. These measures come in the wake of a stabbing that left one person injured on Friday night followed by a pair of shootings on Saturday. Capt. Valerie Littlejohn of the Oklahoma City Police detailed one incident, "A couple of these individuals opened fire towards the other group of people that they were having altercation with," in a statement reported by KFOR.com.
The enforcement action follows a broader trend of increased policing in response to violence involving youth in public spaces. Oklahoma City's decision reflects a concern shared by many urban centers facing similar challenges. Police Chief Bacy, reflecting on the gravity of these incidents, especially those involving juveniles, stated, "I’m afraid, I’m afraid," an emotion conveyed during a press conference and reported by News9. "Anytime you hear of a 14-year-old with a gun, I can’t think of a rational decision that a 14-year-old is going to make with a handgun in public."
Amidst the violence, police were able to take a 14-year-old male into custody in connection with one of the shootings that resulted in four individuals sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. The focus of the ongoing investigation is to piece together the origins of the firearms used and to address the larger issue of gun accessibility to minors. "That’s all part of the investigation," said Capt. Littlejohn, who discussed the details in a session with News9. The sustained law enforcement presence, particularly on busy weekend nights, is intended to ensure the safety of the community. The added patrols are set to emphasize enforcement of a 9 p.m. curfew for minors unless accompanied by an adult.
