The Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) has revised its mission statement, signaling a renewed commitment to not only maintaining public safety but also to placing a stronger focus on rehabilitation. The updated mission, as reported by the ODOC yesterday now reads: "To build a stronger Oklahoma by transforming lives in a safe, rehabilitative, and compassionate environment." It's a move that aligns with trends aimed at facilitating the successful reintegration of the previously incarcerated into society.

Developed with insights from staff across various tiers, the newly articulated mission strives to now carefully combine the objective of rehabilitation with the imperative of public safety. According to ODOC, this refreshed approach doesn't just aim to reduce recidivism, it looks to actively arm justice-involved individuals with necessary life skills. "Our mission has evolved to match the nature of our work," ODOC Executive Director Steven Harpe echoed in a statement.

ODOC’s historical responsibility to protect the public, as well as its employees and offenders, remains a cornerstone of its operations. Yet, with this revision, there appears to be a distinct pivot toward embracing the rehabilitative element of corrections. As the ODOC statement underscores, this initiative is in part a homage to the legacy of Kate Barnard, Oklahoma's own champion for rehabilitation and compassion in public service, suggesting a turn towards a more progressive corrections philosophy.
