As the window to request absentee ballots in Oklahoma came to a close today at 5 p.m., Oklahomans were reminded of another provision in the state's voting laws that caters to those who find themselves suddenly incapacitated. Oklahoma law specifies that registered voters who become physically unable to reach the polls after the 5 p.m. deadline still have a right to vote under certain emergency provisions.

According to KTUL, the County Election Board officials are the ones to contact as soon as possible to arrange for an emergency ballot. Emergencies that qualify under this law include unforeseen incidents such as illness or injury that prevent a voter from being able to physically attend their polling place.

In a related note, the Okmulgee County Election Board is ensuring that voters are aware of their rights in such situations and how to proceed. "Voting is our constitutional right, but life happens," said Okmulgee County Election Board Secretary Ashley Carnes. In the case of emergencies like "Injury, illness, or even childbirth can prevent a voter from being able to go to the polls. That’s why it’s important to make sure voters know their rights in the event of an emergency,” Carnes underscored the importance of knowing the procedure, FOX23 reported.

Earlier, those planning to vote absentee were urged to submit their requests before the deadline. The Oklahoma State Election Board noted that ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on November 5 to be counted. Any registered voter could request an absentee ballot without having to provide a specific reason, however, some voters may qualify for special conditions or need to confirm their addresses, KOCO informed the public. The process for requesting these ballots could be initiated through the Oklahoma Voter Portal or by mailing in the necessary forms to the voter's county election board.

While the absentee ballot request deadline has passed, the emergency ballot for those incapacitated remains a critical safety net for the electoral process.
