On a mission to tackle the affordable housing crisis in Oklahoma, Senators Julia Kirt and Chuck Hall have teamed up for a second year to spearhead an interim study aimed at better understanding and resolving the state's housing shortage. During the Senate Finance Committee's latest session, the bipartisan duo looked into the efforts being made at both state and local levels to carve out tangible solutions.

According to a statement made by the Oklahoma State Senate website, Hall expressed his commitment to bipartisanship and action. "Ensuring Oklahoma has an ample supply of affordable and available homes is not a partisan issue, and that’s why I’m proud to work across the aisle to find housing solutions that help all Oklahomans," Hall said. He added the urgency of now being "the time for action," acknowledging the prolonged deliberations on this issue in the Capitol.

The interim study shone a light on the Housing Needs Assessment Project, a collaborative venture between the University of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Housing Finance Authority (OHFA), which includes a public web portal estimating housing unit supply and demand in Oklahoma. Senator Kirt highlighted how significant this data is in contextualizing the plight of low-income citizens. "Those earning an average wage in our state may be doing okay in terms of finding places they can live, but our market offers almost nothing for low-income folks and very low-income folks, leaving them nowhere that they can afford to live," Kirt explained, as noted by the Oklahoma State Senate website. Such conditions exacerbate not only the eviction crisis but also homelessness, she added, emphasizing the need to address foundational issues.

The committee received updates on the Oklahoma Housing Stability Program; which actively contributes to housing construction, particularly in the state's rural areas. Hall, the program's Senate author, oversaw the allocation of $215 million in funding, primarily dedicated to bolstering rural housing availability. Approximately a third of the program's zero-interest loans have been distributed by OHFA to private developers, initiating 21 housing projects across 17 counties, and funds remain available for future endeavors. "This is a historic investment by the state, and I am grateful to Senator Hall for his bipartisanship on this issue as we continue to work together to address the need of all Oklahomans to be able to access safe, affordable housing," Kirt remarked, acknowledging the program's impact and ongoing efforts, as reported by the Oklahoma State Senate.
