In response to the growing flooding concerns in Orange County, Commissioner Nicole Wilson calls for a pause on development along Reams Road in Windermere. A district increasingly plagued by water woes, the area is known for its susceptibility to flooding, further exacerbated by the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in 2022 and the more recent Hurricanes Helene and Milton. These issues will take center stage in an upcoming meeting set for today at 9 a.m. as public input is sought.
According to ClickOrlando, the situation has become untenable for residents, as the intersection of Reams Road and Ficquette Road, near Summerlake Boulevard, has seen significant flooding. This is a direct result of conservation wetlands and surrounding retention ponds that are not effectively managing runoff despite the issuance of conservation impact permits in 2019/2020. Wilson remarked, "I’m calling on the Board to take urgent action to prevent further development in the affected area until permanent solutions can be implemented."
People living in the region are no strangers to the disruptive force of water in their daily lives. Mike Mooney, a resident of the Buena Vista Place apartments on Reams Road, recounts flooding hampering local business accessibility. "I have seen (the flooding) get worse since the development has increased," Mooney stated, per My News 13. His experiences during Hurricane Ian highlighted the vulnerability of the area's infrastructure, as the flooding significantly limited customer reach to businesses like the New York Stuff-A-Bagel shop where he works.
The county is considering pausing development in this area to allow time to address flooding issues. Commissioner Wilson will present the moratorium proposal at an upcoming meeting to prevent worsening conditions and align future development with Orange County's environmental needs.
