As Hurricane Milton approaches, major transportation hubs in Orlando are taking significant steps to ensure safety. As reported by ClickOrlando, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) announced on Monday the suspension of operations at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Orlando Executive Airport (ORL), anticipating the impact of the oncoming storm. The cessation of these services is slated for Wednesday morning, with a precise time yet to be disclosed.
Beyond halting commercial passenger and private flights, the airports will maintain operations to a certain extent. Specifically, they will remain accessible to emergency aid and relief flights, ensuring a conduit for necessary aid remains available, according to a news release.
GOAA officials stated that regular airport operations will resume as soon as possible, depending on the results of damage assessments after Hurricane Milton. Meanwhile, FOX 35 Orlando detailed the airport authorities' advisement that residents should look elsewhere for shelter, reinforcing the earlier stated position against the airport being used as a protective haven during the storm.
