The Orlando Police Department (OPD) has entered the digital age by launching a new public safety app. WFTV reported that this initiative aims to keep the local community informed and engaged with real-time updates and resources. The app promises to put at users' fingertips the range of services offered by OPD, including real-time incident reporting, local crime trends, and a platform for public record requests.
Among the key features celebrated by the app is the provision of active call updates, which inform residents about ongoing incidents near them and neighborhood incidents that track local safety concerns and crime, according to FOX 35 Orlando. Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith expressed the department's commitment to enhancing community relations and streamlining access to law enforcement resources, all integrated into a single, convenient mobile application that aggregates a disparate host of resources previously scattered throughout the City of Orlando’s website.
The app also enables residents to explore career opportunities with OPD and tap into a repository of community resources for those in need. Expressing his vision for the app, as FOX 35 Orlando detailed, Chief Smith said, "Our goal with the OPD app is to create a safer, more connected community," acknowledging the rise of digital mediums as central to modern community engagement. He further emphasized that the app represents a bridge meant to render the police's public safety materials "accessible to everyone, anywhere, with the tap of a smartphone."
The OPD app, now available for free on the App Store and Google Play, extends police visibility into citizens' virtual lives.
