In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is presenting a unique event titled "Awareness: Two Stories, One Powerful Message." Slated for Sunday, the evening will feature two performances that delve into the personal experiences of individuals with breast cancer—one being a recollection of someone who fought against the disease and the other from a survivor making light of her struggle through performance art. As reported by WFTV, the initiative aims to embody the resilience and strength of those affected by the condition.
The theatrical production "My Left T!t" recounts the compelling tale of Gwen, who bravely battled with breast cancer and the profound effects it had on her existence, especially with her relationship with her dog Omie. The piece, posthumously co-written by Gwen and Brandon Roberts, has been highly celebrated, winning the Best Veteran Producer Audience Choice Award and the Critic’s Choice Award for Best Drama at the 2019 Orlando International Fringe Festival. Furthermore, a dollar from every ticket sold will be donated to the Promise Fund, integrating support for the cause with the richness of theatre, detailed by Gotta Go Orlando.
Both Roberts and McCleary are Orlando locals enriched in the arts scene, with Roberts serving as a director, actor, and artistic director for the Gromalot Theatre Factory, and McCleary, beyond her stage performances, also acts as a producer and creator of her works. In their respective performances, they capture not just stories of survival and resilience but also the indelible memory of those affected by cancer—the performance by Roberts serves as a heartfelt tribute to his dear friend Gwen, according to Gotta Go Orlando.
Those interested in attending the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater event on October 20 and contributing to a cause that affects numerous lives annually can secure their tickets through the Dr. Phillips Center's website.
