On the night of October 21, officers with the Oxnard Police Department were called to the 3700 block of Leeward Way in response to a shots-fired report, and upon arrival, they encountered a man who reportedly aimed a firearm at them, FOX LA reported. In the subsequent confrontation, police fired at the suspect, who was then transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

Independent news outlet RMG News captured video footage of the incident, which showed the man, described as wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap, shouting at officers and brandishing a revolver, he then pointed it at approaching law enforcement personnel, prompting an officer to discharge their weapon, according to KTLA. The type of ammunition used by the police has not been clarified, with questions remaining whether standard or "non-lethal" rounds were involved during the altercation.

The suspect, a 34-year-old Oxnard resident whose name has not been released, did not comply with the officers' attempts to de-escalate the situation; he was accused of being uncooperative and eventually aiming the gun at officers, which led to the shooting, Oxnard Police Department informed. Sergeant Jaime Miranda of the Oxnard Police Department is listed as the contact person for further details on the ongoing investigation, and the department plans to release a Community Critical Incident Debriefing video at a future, undetermined date.

Following department protocol for an officer-involved shooting, the two officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues, their identities, along with further details about their service record, will be disclosed in an upcoming news release, they will be on leave until the investigation progresses which is a standard procedure in such cases, according to FOX LA. Meanwhile, the Oxnard Police Department's Major Crimes Unit, together with observers from the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, are examining the event, and Detectives are asking anyone with additional information to come forward.
