Chaos erupted at Perry High School in Pittsburgh on Monday afternoon when a fight broke out among students, leading to the deployment of pepper spray. According to WTAE, the incident occurred after a student sprayed pepper spray into a group of five men, igniting a physical altercation. Officials from both city and school police were called to intervene, and they, too, resorted to using pepper spray to control the situation.
Pittsburgh Public Schools Director of Public Relations Ebony Pugh explained that the altercation persisted despite police directives, resulting in an officer falling to the ground. Following this, city police used pepper spray to disperse the students involved. The affected students received care from the school nurse following the incident, "Pugh said city and school police intervened, leading to officials using their own pepper spray to stop the altercation," as detailed by WTAE.
The confrontation did not come without consequences for those attempting to subdue it. One school police officer was hospitalized due to the prolonged effects of the pepper spray. The school authorities promptly notified the parents of the students involved in the incident.
In a follow-up on the disturbance, WPXI reported that the scuffle occurred shortly after dismissal. "Pugh says the school nurse cared for all the students affected by the pepper spray," ensuring they received proper attention after the exposure. Meanwhile, the school's administration is likely addressing the broader implications of such an incident in what should be a safe environment for students and staff.
