The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations (PCHR) unveiled the names of its 2024 Social Justice Awards honorees, individuals, and organizations celebrated for championing human and civil rights within the city. As reported by phila.gov, the annual event, paralleling Human Relations Month, is set to take place at the Free Library of Philadelphia on October 17, and will be hosted by Shaynah Ferreira of "Good Day Philadelphia."

In an expression of civic honor, PCHR Executive Director, Kia Ghee, lauded the laureates in a statement obtained by phil.gov, saying, "This year’s honorees exemplify the leadership and dedication needed to create a more just and inclusive Philadelphia." Ghee added that the work of the awardees underpins the protection of rights for all city dwellers. Among the honorees, Nikki Bagby leads The International People’s Storehouse, impacting thousands over 22 years, whereas Rosalind Pichardo galvanizes efforts against violence and Mary Kalyna stimulates civic engagement around Ukrainian rights.

In the realm of Arts & Culture, the awards recognized an array of cultural architects. Jacen Bowman, celebrated for his make-up artistry, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, and James Claiborne, recognized for his pivotal role at the Barnes Foundation, are to be honored for enriching the city's cultural tapestry. Chanel Holland, the founder of Chocolate Ballerina Company, is praised for her commitment to democratizing dance in the urban communities, as stated by phil.gov.

The Law Enforcement/Public Service category lauds figures such as James Washington, a former police officer turned Climate Manager at Conwell Middle School, and Inspector Jarreau Thomas, a police inspector with a 21-year service record. Thomas is lauded, hosting youth engagement programs, and strengthening police residency ties, according to phil.gov. While Sgt. Christopher Fitzgerald is to be honored posthumously, Deputy Commissioner Myesha Massey is noted for her trailblazing roles and community initiatives within the Philadelphia Police Department.

To crown the awards, State Representative Joanna McClinton is the recipient of the Clarence Farmer Award, bestowed in memory of PCHR's first Chairman. McClinton has broken ceilings as the Speaker of the Pennsylvania House, owing to her longstanding dedication to legal aid and community development.
