A 65-year-old Philadelphia man, Vladimir Lushevskiy, is currently held in a New Jersey jail after his wife, Lola Karabaeva, was found dead in a closet at their home; he faces multiple charges including murder, abuse of a corpse, and weapons offenses.
Lushevskiy was apprehended at a Red Carpet Inn in Westhampton Township, New Jersey, in possession of a loaded .38 caliber revolver handgun, as CBS News Philadelphia reports, his arrest on gun charges comes amid allegations that he killed his wife whose body was discovered last Sunday by Philadelphia police after she was reportedly missing since October 12, which had significance as the birthday of their late son.
In detailing the circumstances of the detention, Judge Craig Ambrose stated that the severity of the Pennsylvania charges and Lushevskiy fleeing with a loaded weapon led to the decision to hold him without bail; Ambrose declared, "no amount of monetary bail, non-monetary conditions or combination of monetary bail and conditions would reasonably assure" Lushevskiy's court appearance if released, according to NBC Philadelphia.
Neighbors noted that the day Karabaeva was last seen was also the birthday of their son Eugene, who passed away years ago. Police have not commented on how this detail may impact the case as the investigation continues, and no new information has been released. However, sources told 6abc that the motive might be related to previous marital tensions following their son's death.
Lushevskiy was represented by defense attorney Anthony Rizzo at the New Jersey hearing, who argued for pretrial release on the gun charges, citing his client's incapability of posting bail and the inevitability of his extradition to Pennsylvania, where Lushevskiy stands accused of homicide amongst other charges, he is set to appear in court again on December 14, for a pre-extradition hearing as per court documents.
