The city of Phoenix is committed to earning back public trust through transparency and action, as stated in their recent update. This comes in the wake of three significant police incidents that have stirred community concerns: the arrest of Tyron McAlpin, a hearing-impaired individual; a police shooting in a dollar store; and the police response to a reported gun presence at a local school event.
Investigations into the arrest of McAlpin by the Phoenix Police Department's Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) began in late August. Following the dollar store shooting and school incident, both occurring this past weekend, the PSB launched investigations earlier this week. Given the start of the PSB's inquiries, the results of the investigation into the school campus threat, which turned out to have been a false alarm, have yet to be seen.
According to the City of Phoenix's statement, these cases are also subjected to the scrutiny of the City's civilian oversight mechanisms, including the Office of Accountability and Transparency and the Civilian Review Board. Additional personal review by Interim Police Chief Michael Sullivan has been assured for each case.
The City Council has emphasized the meticulous review of policies, specifically pertaining to interactions with youth and vulnerable populations – an assurance coming after a juvenile, mistaken for a school threat, was tased for non-compliance during the incident. It was made clear that in this event, no firearms were discharged. This directive was part of the response to a U.S. Department of Justice investigation, aiming to augment investigations into police misconduct, as per the City of Phoenix's official website.
While the outcomes of the ongoing investigations are pending, the City promises to share the findings with the public. In the interim, the Police Department reiterates its commitment to school safety, coordinating with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to refine procedures and develop comprehensive safety plans for future events.
