A brutal attack on a Phoenix police officer has culminated in a decade-long prison sentence for the assailant, Rudy Gomez. As reported on the Maricopa County Attorney's Office website, Gomez has been convicted on three counts of Aggravated Assault, considered a Class Three Felony.

The incident, which took place near Central Avenue and Thomas Road in April of the previous year, began when the defendant's girlfriend, involved in a domestic altercation with Gomez, sought help from the officer. According to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, Gomez shattered the window of the vehicle the girlfriend was in, with their three children inside. Attempting to de-escalate the volatile situation, the officer was then savagely beaten by Gomez, who left him unconscious and with multiple serious injuries.

In a statement from Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, she touched on the severity of Gomez's actions, saying, "It is hard to come up with words that adequately describe the savage, cruel beating of this officer, and the sheer inhumanity of the attack." Mitchell emphasized the importance of upholding protection for those who serve the public, stating, "We must support the people who protect us. One way we do that is to put defendants like this one in prison for as long as the law will allow."

The beaten officer suffered significant injuries in the attack by Gomez, who inflicted a fractured orbital socket, multiple head lacerations, and a broken nasal bone. Fleeing the scene after the assault, Gomez was later detained by other responding officers.
