A Plainfield Township teen has been taken into custody following allegations of sextortion involving up to 17 of his peers, as reported by the Kent County Sheriff's Office. The 14-year-old is now facing charges including three counts of child sexually abusive activity, and two counts of using a computer to commit a crime, along with one count of possession of child sexually abusive material. Investigators have indicated the boy's method involved the use of social media to coerce his teenage targets into sending explicit images. This pattern of pressuring individuals for improper images and then threatening to distribute them if demands are not met typifies a sextortion offense. WZZM 13 has shared safety advice in light of the incident, including being selective with online sharing and maintaining skepticism toward strangers on the internet. "We encourage anyone experiencing pressure to send illicit images or being bullied to contact a trusted adult; whether it’s a parent, teacher, School Resource Officer, or family friend. These crimes have lasting impact and trauma on their victims and our local law enforcement community takes these very seriously," Sergeant Kailey Gilbert of the Kent County Sheriff's Office urged in a statement obtained by WZZM 13.
