The Plano Police Department took to social media to regretfully inform the public of the line-of-duty death of Deputy Ruben Garcia from Cameron County Precinct 1. According to the Plano Texas Police Department, Deputy Garcia's vehicle was struck by a distracted driver on Monday, and he passed away the same day after being taken to a Brownsville hospital. The Plano Police Chief, Ed Drain, expressed the department's sorrow and called for the community to keep Garcia's family, friends, and coworkers in their thoughts and prayers.
Chief Drain also noted that all sworn officers would continue to band their badges in Deputy Garcia's honor until after his funeral services. The act is a solemn tradition within law enforcement and serves to quickly symbolize a department's collective mourning and respect for the fallen officer.
According to the Plano Police Department's statement, Garcia had been responding to a traffic accident on TX Highway 48 when the incident occurred.
