A resident of Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, Jasmine Rae Valdez, age 25, entered a guilty plea on charges of assault. Valdez pleaded guilty to Assault with a Dangerous Weapon with Intent to do Bodily Harm in Indian Country and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury in Indian Country, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced.
The case stems from an August 29, 2023, incident where Valdez was accused of having aided and abetted in an attack involving a dangerous weapon that left the victim with serious injuries. This violent encounter took place within the confines of the Chickasaw Nation Reservation, an area designated as Indian Country under federal law, which allows for a distinct set of judicial proceedings. Following the indictment, the Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police, together with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, led the investigation into the assault.
During the proceedings, U.S. Magistrate Judge D. Edward Snow oversaw the acceptance of the guilty plea. Post-plea, he ordered that a presentence investigation report be completed. Following this development, Valdez has been remanded into the custody of the United States Marshal Service, where she will remain until her sentencing is determined, according to the same press release.
Assistant United States Attorney Kevin Gross represented the government in what proved to be a high-stakes acknowledgment of guilt.
