Queen Creek's push for youth engagement in local government took a significant leap forward, as the Town Council recently appointed 13 teens to the Mayor’s Teen Advisory Committee (M-TAC). According to an article on the town's official website, the Wednesday meeting was a scene of proud proclamation as Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley welcomed the new members. "This is such an incredibly exciting and important milestone for our community,” Wheatley said. “I am so thankful to everyone who submitted a notice of interest form and truly wish I could have appointed everyone!"

These 13 young individuals bring diverse backgrounds and ideas to the table, with their selection rooted in community commitment and a shared goal to enact change. Mayor Wheatley expressed her confidence in the passionate cohort, saying to the town's official website, "I am very confident that this group of passionate youth will bring an important perspective, and I cannot wait to jump in and get to work." The committee members include a breadth of students from various schools and grade levels, each selected to provide a representative sample of the teen population within Queen Creek.

The M-TAC is more than just a symbolic gesture; it's poised to make tangible impacts. These teens will lend their voices to local governance, ensuring that the youth's needs, often sidelined, are front and center when it comes to policymaking. The committee is tasked with not only voicing concerns but fostering civic responsibility amongst their peers.

The terms set for committee members are designed to create sustainability, with freshmen and sophomores serving two school-year terms this year to provide continuity. In addition, Queen Creek offers additional opportunities for youth engagement like the LINK Queen Creek, which, according to the town's announcement, takes place every second and fourth Friday evening at the Recreation Annex. A dedicated teen space is also on the horizon with the new Recreation Center, scheduled to open in 2025,

Queen Creek's investment in its youth is a testament to the town's forward-thinking approach to inclusivity in civic processes. For residents keen on staying updated on youth initiatives or the committee’s progress, resources are readily available on the town's website and linked social media pages.
