An infestation of bats at Northern Arizona University's Mountain View Hall has forced students to move out and receive rabies treatment. The students were relocated to off-campus apartments starting October 5, after health officials declared the dormitory unsafe. This decision followed a resident's report of a bat in their room in early September, which later tested positive for rabies, according to The Lumberjack.
Many students faced emotional stress and difficulties due to the sudden move, and felt that Northern Arizona University (NAU) did not handle the situation well. Parents, like Matt Allison, also expressed frustration, noting a lack of clear communication. "Parents got very little communication, and the kids received chaotic communication," Allison told ABC15. Additionally, students experienced financial strain from unreimbursed expenses, such as meal plans and parking passes. However, an NAU spokesperson claimed that students were informed about refund and exchange processes.
Some students ended up in unsuitable living arrangements, sharing spaces with strangers who weren't screened by the university. NAU sophomore Julian Herrera described living with an older roommate as "weird" since the roommate was working. Many displaced students shared similar feelings. Additionally, families were concerned about health risks, as prolonged exposure to bats and their droppings can lead to respiratory diseases. However, NAU stated that there were no reports of bats in the dorms before the capture in early September, according to ABC15.
The bat infestation continues to disrupt students' academic lives, with NAU allowing them to miss class during the move. Student Caleb Casillas admitted he was struggling with his studies despite these allowances, indicating the broader impact of the situation on student well-being. Although the university claims to be taking steps to address the issue and communicate, many students and parents feel uninformed. They are now waiting to see how NAU will resolve the ongoing logistical challenges caused by the infestation.
