At the Glendale Police Department, a shared commitment to bolstering law enforcement and upholding public safety was the day's agenda, with key local and state figures coming together to spotlight critical efforts in these arenas. Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-03) took the stage alongside Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers and Arizona Police Association President Justin Harris, focusing on the progress made and the path ahead. According to an announcement released by Gallego's office, the congressman emphasized his ongoing efforts to secure substantial funding for local law enforcement.
"Ensuring Arizonans' safety is my top priority," Rep. Gallego informed the gathered media, touting his record, having voted for more than $168 billion for law enforcement nationally, and his success in channeling $61 million of that funding directly into Arizona. Meanwhile, Mayor Weiers extended his gratitude for the support on public safety, highlighting the investments in Glendale's public safety infrastructure, including a new mobile command center and improvements to their 9-1-1 communications center, which answers close to 400,000 calls annually. Despite the pressing need for federal policies aligning with local law enforcement objectives, Weiers urged the congressional delegation to not cease their support, according to Rep. Ruben Gallego's office.
In a display of appreciation for Gallego's commitment, Justin Harris of the Arizona Police Association told Gallego's official website, "His dedication and commitment to ensure that police officers have the necessary funding and resources to enforce the laws, to maintain order and to support our communities is something we greatly appreciate and respect." These words, echoing respect for Gallego's endeavors, encapsulate the strong support from the law enforcement community.
Delving into Gallego's legislative record, the congressman has not only championed substantial funding measures but also spearheaded the introduction of several bills aimed at enhancing local law enforcement capabilities. Earlier this year, he presented the First Responders Emergency Assistance Act, aiming to establish a new grant program for communities grappling with increased migrant arrivals—an initiative illustrating federal concern for local exigencies. Similarly, his contributions extended to supporting various bipartisan bills designed to reinforce the efficiency and community ties of the COPS program and, broadly, local law enforcement agencies.
Rep. Gallego's legislative agenda has demonstrated a multi-faceted approach to law enforcement issues, addressing everything from filling vacancies and retaining personnel to expanding mental health coordination between police and community centers. Notably, the Enhancing COPS Hiring Program Grants for Local Law Enforcement Act and the Invest to Protect Act stand out as strategic efforts to reinforce police forces in both urban and tribal areas. Moreover, his focus on accreditation through the EAGLE Act promises to ensure high standards across small and mid-sized departments. Most recently, his endorsement of the BADGES for Native Communities Act highlights a bipartisan stride towards strengthening the rule of law in Indian Country.
