Rice County students with aspirations in law enforcement are once again presented with the opportunity to receive financial support through a memorial scholarship. This award is set up in honor of the late Rice County Sheriff Dave Schweisthal, and is being offered to those pursuing degrees or certificates in the field. Schweisthal, who dedicated 33 years of his life to the Rice County Sheriff’s Office, with 17 years as sheriff, is remembered for his commitment to public service. A matching contribution from the Rice County Deputy Sheriff’s Association means that two students will each be able to benefit from a $1,000 scholarship.
In the light of recent events emphasizing the importance of integrity and empathy in law enforcement, this scholarship aims to foster such qualities in the next generation of officers. To be eligible, according to the official announcement, applicants must hail from Rice County, including cities such as Faribault and Northfield, among others. Their educational journey should be geared towards an associate or bachelor’s degree in law enforcement or a related criminal justice major, or they must be enrolled in a Law Enforcement Certificate or Skills Program. For those selected winners still finishing their high school education, the scholarship will be disbursed in two parts, fostering a continuous support through their academic pursuits.
Prospective applicants are required to submit a comprehensive application packet by November 15. The materials include a personal information page, an essay response, a reference form, and an information release. Submissions can be made in person at the Rice County Sheriff’s Office starting October 28, or mailed to the Rice County Deputy Sheriff’s Association.
