Jonah Matthew Lowe, a 27-year-old man from Royal Oak, faces serious charges after an incident in which he allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend and was then stabbed by her, as reported by local authorities. The Madison Heights Police Department, citing 10 felony counts, has charged Lowe with crimes including first-degree home invasion and unlawful imprisonment. In the chaotic sequence of events, the ex-girlfriend responded in apparent self-defense, leading to an injury for both parties involved.
The incident occurred Saturday when police received a call from Lowe claiming he had been stabbed by his girlfriend. In turn, a second 911 call was placed by a 25-year-old woman — identified as Lowe's ex-girlfriend — saying she had been shot by Lowe, clickondetroit reports. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the woman with a gunshot wound to the leg, and Lowe had fled.
Police say the woman was taken to Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in stable condition. During the ordeal, she had been returning home, her 2-year-old daughter in tow, when Lowe allegedly confronted her with a handgun and restricted her freedom to leave. It was then that she reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Lowe while he was distracted, allowing her to flee with her child. A statement obtained by The Detroit News delineated this act as a desperate measure for self-preservation.
An investigation revealed Lowe had been laying in wait inside her home, prior to her arrival. After the confrontation, Lowe allegedly shot the woman in the leg as she attempted escape. According to CBS Detroit, Lowe was later arrested in Royal Oak and also taken to the hospital for his stab wound, with both parties currently in stable condition. Lowe's arraignment took place on Zoom and his bond has been set at $1 million.
Inquiries about the incident are being directed to Detective Lt. David Koehler of the Madison Heights Police Department. The authorities continue their investigation into the events leading up to the charges made against Lowe.
