A heavy atmosphere has settled over a rural community in Oceana County after a tragic all-terrain vehicle accident took the life of a 19-year-old this past weekend. The incident, which involved a side-by-side vehicle rolling over, occurred on East Madison Road near Maple Island Road in Colfax Township, according to WOOD TV8.
Authorities have disclosed that the vehicle, piloted by a 31-year-old Grand Rapids man, was traveling on a gravel part of the road when it overturned. Driving westbound, the driver apparently lost control of the ATV, which led to the vehicle’s deadly rollover, as recounted by the Oceana County Sheriff's Office in statements obtained by WZZM 13.
The sheriff’s office has further revealed that the 19-year-old back-seat passenger sustained fatal injuries. The young passenger's identity has not been released at this time. Refusing treatment at the scene, both the driver and another 19-year-old occupant who were in the ATV at the time of the crash received injuries that were considered not life-threatening. The latter detail was highlighted in reports by UP North Live.
The cause of the crash is currently under active investigation to uncover the finer details of the event. Assistance at the scene was provided by Life EMS, Walkerville Rescue, and the Michigan State Police.
